06:50 pm: DBZ - Choice to Be Different
Choice to Be Different by Kizmet. Just before Gohan starts High School Trunks and Goten decide they need a few new playmates. They find the Dragon Balls and wish youthful versions of their fathers into their time line.

Status: 11 chapters. Complete.

This story is part of a three different, larger series, some of which follow various canons and others which are AU. This particular story is set in the canon verse so it has spoilers for all of the Buu saga and all canon pairings are intact. It's safe to read without reading any of the others. All of the other stories I've read so far have been pretty good character wise, but this is the one where the plot really appealed to me. I am a sucker for young!Vegeta and young!Goku, plus changing the past. Kizmet has a really good grasp on everyone's characterization and isn't afraid to dip into the best and worst of the past. I think the story could have been a little more exciting, but the AU verse following it does look promising.

09:28 pm: Star Trek 09 - Midnight Judges
Midnight Judges by lettered. In the two weeks following the events of Star Trek Into Darkness, a Starfleet officer tries to put Starfleet back together again.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

Disclaimer: I really disliked ST: Into Darkness. The whitewashing, the treatment of women and diversity, the warmongering - none of them were anything like the Star Trek I knew and loved because the one thing that should have been obvious about Star Trek is that it presents a better future, one where racism, sexism, etc. have been eliminated. I can't even read reboot ST fic anymore because it makes me really angry to see what's been done to Star Trek.

So I took a bit of a risk reading this, hoping that the author was as dissatisfied as I was. It turns out that was the case, though I have to admit that I think that the author should have been even harsher on say, Captain Kirk. But if you got rid of everything I disliked, there wouldn't be much of a movie left. One lovely thing Lettered does is present a whole range of diverse characters who are living Roddenberry's dream of equality. Admiral Rosales is a great pov character who has hir flaws, but also strengths. The fic does make you imagine that really the whole reboot verse went wrong when Nero interfered, and there's a plea for hope for the future at the end which I'm not very optimistic about. To me, the reboot verse will always be the lesser and wrong universe, but your mileage may vary. This is the best in universe fix it which addresses the whitewashing, lack of due process, warmongering in Starfleet, lack of diversity, and sexism of the reboot.

12:36 am: Rivers of London Series - Berkeley Square
Berkeley Square by rabidsamfan. “Keep breathing,” someone said close by, someone the pain refused to let him identify. “It’s a habit you don’t want to break.”

Status: One-shot. Complete.

I am always up for reading interesting stories which give us good insight into Nightingale and this story does not disappoint.

12:30 am: Merlin - Virtues, Chicken and Destiny Series
Virtues, Chicken and Destiny Series (on A03) by anonymous. Starts after 'A Servant of Two Masters'. Arthur, worried about Merlin's excessive drinking and scars on his neck, starts trying to snoop around to see how he can help his manservant with whatever demons are driving him to the tavern. Instead, he stumbles across the webs of lies his friends are spinning around him. Heavy is the head that wears the crown, though Arthur had never needed to bear such weight on his own - but until he finds out what everyone is hiding from him, that is exactly what he'll do.

Status: Multiple stories. Ongoing. Soon to be posted in full on A03.

So this is a rewrite of the series from mid 4th season onwards. The first story is sort of a magic reveal fic postponed. Arthur finds out a lot of about the lies which are being given to him, but not everything is revealed. It's a really nice read, and fills in some gaps in those stories very well. The rest of the series is a rewrite of the rest of the fourth season with logical consequences to episodes, and character growth. I'm actually rather surprised at how patient Arthur was with Merlin and his secrets, though it gets a lot more angsty after the inevitable magic reveal.

11:49 am: Marvel: X-Men First Class - Bad Teacher
Bad Teacher by TardisIsTheOnlyWaytoTravel. Mr Lehnsherr (formerly known as the super-villain Magneto) is Jean's favourite teacher ever. This is not actually the same thing as being a good teacher.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

This is really cute and funny. Jean's perspective on Erik is pretty entertaining. This is also a nice happy ending in the future for the movie (soon to be movies).

05:56 pm: Avengers - Robot Trip
Robot Trip by copperbadge. Tony is driving from Malibu to Manhattan with a robot in the back seat and Captain America riding escort at Pepper's behest. What could possibly go wrong?

Status: One-shot. Complete.

This is a really fun, somewhat adorable road trip. It even made me laugh in places. Tony and Steve are perfectly in character and Dummy is also at his best.

11:14 am: Avengers - Coulson's Eleven
Coulson's Eleven by copperbadge. After Vanko destroyed the Stark Expo, SHIELD instituted a Superhuman Detention program, designed to capture and hold dangerous people -- dangerous people like Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and others who made themselves noticeable. The superhumans SHIELD has imprisoned -- and some SHIELD agents themselves -- have other ideas about what constitutes 'dangerous'...

Status: 7 chapters. Complete.

This is a fun take on an alternate form of the Avengers which isn't nearly as angsty as the description makes it sound. The interpersonal relationships make this fic, especially people who weren't there before like Peter.

06:38 pm: Discworld - Mister Vimes'd Go Spare!
Mister Vimes'd Go Spare! by Lunik. In the wake of the death of his Grace Sir Samuel Vimes, the various city watches across the disc are brought together in a way seldom observed among coppers.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

Both Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett share a unique view of gods which, for some reason, translates into awesome fanfic. That's pretty much all I have to say on the matter.

04:13 pm: DC Universe - Luthor Family Values
Luthor Family Values by nev_longbottom. Lex sues for custody of Superboy.A comedy about family dynamics.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

A hilarious, cracky take on why Lex is a better dad than Superman.

12:59 am: Dresden Files - Let me Light the Sky
Let Me Light the Sky by raiining. Post-Changes and post some of Ghost Story: Harry climbs out of the lake to realize his life is now intimately entangled with that of Gentleman Johnny Marcone.

Status: 11 chapters. Might remain unfinished.

This is pretty much the story I wanted after Ghost Story, so I thought I would rec it here for others who are not happy with the turn the series has taken. I love the way Harry is developing his magic in this story, and all the character interactions are a delight. It's currently at a point where you can stop reading and be mostly satisfied with the idea that there will probably never be more of the fic, even though I wish there was. (I have labeled this fic as gen and slash because the author said the story would be slash but it hasn't contained any slash so far *shrugs*)

07:59 pm: Dresden Files - Meet Shoot
Meet Shoot by Grenegome. Harry meets Marcone before his rise to power.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

This is a really interesting what if universe. I wish there was more of it because the whole early friendship would change so much of the series itself. This is one of the few, plausible ways I could see canon Harry becoming friends with Marcone. (Author labels it as slash but it's really preslash fyi).

The Early Bird by Philomytha. The early bird catches the worm. Dr Walid's first meeting with Nightingale.

Slots perfectly into canon. Very well done.

02:56 pm: Mushi-shi - The Lonely Traveler
The Lonely Traveler by Becky. After becoming snowbound in Adashino's village, Ginko realizes it's no natural storm keeping him there.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

Reads like an episode with a bit more insight into Ginko's character. Well done.

11:19 pm: Star Trek 09 - Hurricane
Hurricane by Sinestrated. Five times Winona Kirk was a badass mom, and one time she realized she’d raised an equally badass son.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

Who doesn't want to see Winona and everyone else being badass? I also appreciate that the author didn't always go for obvious scenes of badassery. Is it a little cliche in places? Yes, but sometimes that can be a good thing. Kirk/Spock is the background pairing in this fic fyi.

01:03 am: Harry Potter/Labyrinth - That We've Broken Their Statues
That We've Broken Their Statues by nagia. Sarah Williams stumbles into the Leaky Cauldron. She stumbles back out again with a Gringotts account she didn't start, a part time job at Hogwarts, and an awkward truce with the Goblin King.

Status: 10 chapter. Very long. Ongoing.

I can only think of one other really good HP/Labyrinth crossover so it was a pleasure to stumble across this one, even if I may have lost hours of time reading it. I really like how Sarah is characterized here, and the integration with the HP universe is excellently done. Despite my complaints about length, the fic is actually well paced and I like how Sarah is gradually learning more about the wizarding world while asking a lot of hard questions that I can't wait to see get answers.

01:39 pm: Thor - Life in Reverse
Life in Reverse by Min Daae. Home is where you make it. Or, the AU where Loki falls to Earth after Thor, wanders around trying to work out what to do with himself, and somehow ends up working for SHIELD. Mostly because supervillains are so plebian.

Status: 18 chapters. Ongoing.

I like this take on Loki. He's slowly figuring things out and making friends, but he hasn't lost his prickly edge. The plot is rather episodic, so it's easy to keep up with too.

09:47 am: Avengers - Every Denny's in America
Every Denny's in America by Sookie Starchild. Thor and Steve are definitely not hiding in a Denny's restaurant. Because Thor doesn't hide and Steve doesn't run away from his problems.

Status: One-shot. Complete.

You don't see many friendship fics between Thor and Steve, and while I share Tony's opinion of Dennys, it's cute to see Thor and Steve bond.

11:40 pm: Natsume Yuujinchou - Magnificent
Magnificent by darkcyan. Natori receives a request that, for once, involves NOT exorcising the target, wonders if this job might finally be the one that's not thrown completely awry by Natsume's unexpected presence, and learns a few new things about Hiiragi in the process. ... Though he has a feeling he's still missing something important.

Status: Long one-shot. Complete.

This is labeled as a romance, but it reads more like gen so I will label it as such. The author has a great Natori voice, and writes a well-realized Hiiragi. I liked the plot too. It could easily fit right in with the manga/anime.

08:36 pm: Natsume Yuujinchou - Never Lag Behind
Never Lag Behind by Girl_Undone. Natsume napping on his desk was a common sight, one that everyone in class C had long since grown used to. (Although the teachers seemed to find it less and less amusing as time wore on.)

Status: 2 chapters. Complete.

I can't resist reccing a fic where the rest of Natsume's friends find out. I wish the fic were a tad bit longer so that they could have talked with Natsume more, but it's a nice little adventure.

07:33 pm: Natsume Yuujinchou - Seven Year Promise
Seven Year Promise by foxinthestars. Natsume is haunted by a recurring nightmare that he's drowning. Nyanko-sensei sets out to investigate, then a strange youkai appears: one who knows that the answer lies in Natsume's past — and needs Tanuma's help to put things right before it's too late.

Status: 5 chapters. Complete.

This is an excellent, long Natsume Yuujinchou story. I liked the original character and it was lovely to see Tanuma finding out more about Takashi's life. Plus, if you've ever wanted to give Takashi a hug when he was a little kid, this is the fic to do it vicariously through.
